Dispensaries are popping up all over the country as using cannabis for medicinal benefits becomes more mainstream. If you’ve never purchased from a dispensary, you’re probably wondering what all of your different options are. One word that you might hear going around is “smalls.”
What Are Smalls?
Contents
You probably thought “what are “smalls” when it comes to weed?” the first time that you heard the phrase. Sometimes referred to as popcorn nugs or popcorn buds, smalls are small, cheaper buds that many dispensaries carry. The size of the buds is about the same as popped popcorn kernels.
They aren’t as big or as beautiful as larger buds but still offer quality highs. Since most dispensaries don’t want to waste any product, they sell “smalls” at lower prices.
How Are Popcorn Nugs Formed?
Even the best cannabis producers can’t ensure that every part of their plant receives just the right amount of sun, water, nutrients, and space that they need to thrive. While the tops of most plants will grow well, the parts that are closer to the soil often create denser, danker flowers. Because the branches are undernourished, they’ll create smaller, airier buds.
How Much Do Smalls Cost?
Cannabis typically comes in three price ranges: high-quality, middle-grade, and bottom-shelf. Most of the time, smalls are considered bottom-shelf flowers. While they may not be as high in quality, smalls are great for those who are on a budget and don’t mind a bit of sacrifice in quality. Even though they’re cheaper and smaller, smalls can still give you the effects that you want.
What Colors Are the Flowers on Smalls?
Like middle-grade and high-quality cannabis, you can tell how good your smalls will be depending on their colors. Shades of brown and yellow are considered the lowest of quality and should be priced accordingly even at high-end dispensaries (if they display them at all).
If you’re looking for mid-quality, shades of green with tints of purple or orange are your best best. High-quality smalls will be deep green and an array of other colors. Keep in mind that each strain will create its own spectrum of colors, although the more intense they are, the better in quality they will be.
Are Smalls Worth the Cost?
The reality is that whether smalls are worth the cost depends on your preferences. In most cases, though, the answer is “yes.” Smalls are often the same quality as the more expensive products. The only reason they are so much more affordable is that small pieces don’t have the same bag appeal as their larger counterparts.
If you want quality at a lower price, it’s a good idea to at least give smalls a try. After all, they’re still much higher quality than shake.
Only you can determine which cannabis options are the best for you. At a minimum, though, you should try smalls. The affordable price and quality product might be just what you need. You can always choose something else the next time if you weren’t satisfied with the high you got from your smalls.
