Is It Cheaper to Make CBD Oil Than to Buy It?
Generally it can be cheaper to make your own CBD oil. However, you won’t benefit from the same quality as you would from a reputable manufacturer. For one thing, most manufacturers use a CO2 extractor, which removes any pesticides or residuals from your CBD.
While you could use an alcohol extraction method for your DIY CBD, we won’t cover that. For one, it’s complicated and more expensive than this simple recipe. Everything you’ll need is probably already in your kitchen.

Different Types of CBD
Before we start, we’ll provide a quick refresher on the different types of CBD to choose from. CBD is a fast growing phenomenon because of its ability to treat symptoms associated with multiple diseases. CBD binds with your ECS (Endocannabinoid System) to reduce inflammation – the number one cause of disease.
1. Full-Spectrum CBD
The grand champion of CBD. Have you ever heard of the entourage effect? CBD is one of over 100 active compounds present in Cannabis sativa. Full-spectrum CBD has elements of all 100 plus compounds. When taken together, these compounds work together to produce maximum bioavailability – thus maximum therapeutic value.
2. CBD Isolate
Isn’t THC one of the compounds in cannabis that makes you high? Yes, which is why some might prefer CBD Isolate. Although there’s not enough THC in full-spectrum (0.3 THC Percentage) to make you high, some still would rather not tempt fate. For example, if you know you’re being tested for drugs.
What You’ll Need Before Starting Your Homemade CBD Oil
When starting your CBD project, consider a high-quality carrier oil. We prefer coconut oil because it’s high in Lauric Acid, a potent antimicrobial. For maximum results, you’ll also want to choose a high-quality CBD strain. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1/2 oz of cannabis flower or industrial hemp flower
- One cup coconut oil (you can also use MCT oil)
- One large stainless steel pot
- Coffee grinder
- Baking sheet
- Aluminum foil
- Thermometer
- Paper towels

Homemade CBD Oil Recipe
1. Preheat Oven:
Heat your oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep in mind that oven temperatures vary. Use a thermometer as undercooking won’t activate the cannabinoids, the compounds responsible for CBD’s benefits. Adversely, overcooking evaporates cannabinoids.
2. Grinding
Grind the cannabis flower coarsely using your coffee grinder. You can also use a pestle or hand grinder, which is more hands-on and can give you more control. To avoid over-cooking your CBD, make sure you don’t over-grind. Small pieces burn easily.
3. Prepping Your Ground Cannabis
Layout ground cannabis onto a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. For best results, lay cannabis out evenly in single layers. Next, cover the cannabis up with aluminum foil.
4. Decarboxylation
Decarboxylation is the process of heating, or decarbing, your CBD. Cannabinoids, in their purest form, are CBDA (cannabidiol acids). When heated, CBDA converts into CBD.
Use a thermometer to ensure your oven reads 250 degrees Fahrenheit—Bake for 30 minutes. Next, remove from the oven and cool for 45 minutes. After peeling off the foil, you should see a golden brown color and smell a pleasant, toasted aroma.
5. Making Your CBD Tincture
While this recipe calls for coconut oil, you can also use olive or almond oil. To mix, turn your stovetop to low heat. Mix in your favorite carrier oil, making sure not to let it simmer.
Make sure your temperature stays around 150 degrees (F) to avoid evaporation—Cook for up to four hours. The longer you cook it, the stronger your final product will be.
6. Strain to Remove Impurities
After letting your mixture cool for about 30 minutes, grab your paper towels. Slowly pour the mixture onto triple-folded paper towels (you can also use coffee filters) while collecting it with a bowl. This process helps discard residuals, like stems and other plant substances.
7. Store Your CBD Oil
Store CBD in a secure container. If you make a large batch, mason jars work great. To make CBD retain its healthful properties, store it in a cool, dark place like your kitchen cabinet or pantry.
