Hemp and Marijuana: Know the Difference

Out of more than thirty variants of the cannabis plant, only 1 strain affects humans. Cannabis indica and subspecies cannabis Sativa and that too only female plants affect humans.

All other strains have so little THC that you will have to smoke pounds to feel anything i.e… they do not get you high. However industrial hemp has many uses, you can make paper, clothing, in the old days they even made sails for ships.

There is a difference between the two names hemp and marijuana. Although they are from the same family. Here are some considerable differences between them.

What Are Hemp and Marijuana?

Contents

Hemp and marijuana are not two different species, rather they are from the same family of cannabis. The only difference is the THC content in it.

The point of THC content which distinguishes these two is 0.3%. Hemp has less than that while marijuana has more. The major difference is this only, as THC is the content that decides the various properties of both plants.

And makes one of them fit for medical and personal use, and the other only for restrictive use.

What Makes Them Different?

Hemp is very low on THC content and that’s why it is unlikely to get high on it. While marijuana can, and that is what people sometimes refer to as weed.

Hemp has a number of uses, it is used in creating different products like paper, clothing, textiles, plastic, milk, protein, and oil.

Which One Can You Grow or Purchase?

Considering the legality of these plants, one is legal while the other is not. Marijuana, since it has over 0.3% THC is illegal to produce.

Although some states in the US allow it for medical purposes, most of the states have already banned it. Whereas, hemp is completely legal everywhere both for growing and using in other products.

Different products of Hemp

Hemp Milk

It is a good alternative for cow’s milk, which is extracted from the plant. Hemp milk is good for your skin and protects you from many heart diseases.

The milk has a nutty flavor and has a rich creamy texture. You can use it for cereal, and smoothies.

Protein Powder

Cannabis seeds are rich in protein and fat, if you need more protein than calories in your meal then protein powder is a better option.

Since calories are not good for those who are into sports or body-building. The hemp protein is a good source for them to fulfill the protein requirements of their body.

Use Cannabis Seed Oil

Having a strict and healthy diet including salads and juices is good for your health. Different oils are available on the market, but most of them come with some of the other unhealthy ingredients.

While hemp seed oil, since it is a plant-based product, is healthy. The only care you need to take with it is not to put it on the flame. Its smoke point is comparatively low, which makes it unfit for cooking.

Both hemp and marijuana are from the same family but still have so many differences. Their legality uses, medical benefits, etc are different.

Marijuana has high THC content and thus can have mind-altering effects, while hemp does not have that much THC which can make you high.

Along with this, hemp is used in different products like milk, oil, and protein powder. Which makes it a product in demand.

People who have lactose intolerance find hemp milk useful, it has a nutty taste as it is plant-based. Hemp is rich in protein and has low fats, which makes it a good source of making protein powder.
