Lighting Up the Path to Recovery: 5 Conditions Medical Marijuana Can Treat

In the past decade, physicians and patients alike have explored the positive benefits of medicinal marijuana to treat a vast range of disorders and symptoms, ranging from everyday aches and pains to severe medical conditions. As research and positive outcomes continue, access to cannabis products is expanding across the states, with many local governments easing restrictions on medical usage, in particular.

Although limited research exists on the effects of medical marijuana, many people flock to cannabis products to sidestep addictive medications—like opioids—and take a more natural route to health and comfort. Additionally, CBD-injected goods are another course of action users can take if they want to bypass the high accompanied by potent THC products without compromising the potential benefits.

Unfamiliar with the pain-alleviating effects of cannabis? Read on to learn more about medical conditions cannabis products can treat.

Substance use disorders

While experts broadcast the benefits of entering a unique treatment & recovery center—i.e., unfettered access to healthcare professionals, the ability to address core wounds fueling substance tendencies, and one-of-a-kind opportunities to establish healthy coping mechanisms—some addicts find solace in unconventional treatment methods, like cannabis-infused products.

Although controversial, many health professionals and recovering addicts rave about the benefits cannabis can have during drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Although it may seem counterintuitive to treat substance abuse disorders with another drug, proponents of marijuana management argue it can help ease withdrawal discomfort.

Remember, weaning off highly addictive substances can be physically and mentally painful, with some experiencing extreme nausea, fatigue, headaches, and anxiety during the beginning phases of detoxification. To combat the myriad of unpleasant symptoms, many have turned toward cannabis products to ease the severity of withdrawal. Additionally, some recovering addicts find abstinence-based AA programs unrealistic and opt for medicinal marijuana products to help them steer clear of highly addictive substances.

Chronic pain

Often, people who experience chronic pain turn to medical marijuana in an attempt to ease day-to-day discomfort instead of using potent, addictive opioids. The natural plant is known for its soothing, calming effects, allowing those living in constant pain to find relief via oils, smoking, or edibles, depending on their preference. Conditions like arthritis—specifically osteoarthritis—fibromyalgia, and PCOS- are just a few disorders amongst a long list of potentially treatable ailments with medicinal cannabis.

Crohn’s disease

Crohn’s disease is a pervasive illness that causes inflammation in the bowel by tearing the lining of the digestive tract. As a result, people often experience intense daily abdominal pain and cramping, in addition to anemia and fatigue, all symptoms that are potentially treatable through cannabis. Many Crohn’s havers sing the praises of medical marijuana and the positive effect on their appetites, allowing them to eat without intense pain by lessening nausea and abdominal cramping.

Insomnia

Many users rave about the positive effects marijuana—specifically Indica strains— can have on their sleeping routines, especially those with insomnia. Because of the ultra-relaxing, drowsy effects of cannabis, those with constant sleep irregularities have a better chance at achieving a deep, restorative slumber with a simple toke. While it may not be wise to light up midday, dropping a tincture or popping an edible before bed may be therapeutic for fatigued insomniacs.

Multiple sclerosis

Upwards of one million people across the United States suffer from multiple sclerosis, a disease that causes exhausting and painful muscle spasms. To combat daily discomfort, many rely on anti-inflammatory medications and, in severe cases, invasive procedures to reduce pain and find comfort. However, in recent years, people with MS have begun exploring the more natural route of medicinal cannabis to treat the disease and find relief instead of potentially addicting over-the-counter pain relievers.

Parting shot

Medical marijuana treatments are becoming widely popular amongst those with chronic health conditions as an alternative to traditional drugs and medicines. Although users should monitor effects closely and expect variations person by person, utilizing cannabis can lead to reduced pain and relaxation.
